Increased relaxation and reduced stress can help you sleep better

Stay with me for a little bit of science…  Massage and bodywork encourage the mind and body to relax by calming the body’s autonomic nervous system.  Your ‘rest and digest’ response is stimulated (this is your parasympathetic nervous system kicking in), which lowers the body’s stress response (‘fight or flight’ / sympathetic nervous system). 

It is this physical response during a Thai Bodywork session that makes you feel more relaxed, and can lower your blood pressure, and reduce pain and stress.  Your body also produces more serotonin during a session, which not only helps you relax, but is also naturally converted by your body into melatonin, the main sleep hormone.

Less pain and better posture can help you sleep better

Bodywork is also great for reducing pain and improving posture.  You might wonder what this has to do with sleep?  If you’re in pain, you can’t relax completely and it can be difficult to get comfortable.  Have you ever had a good night’s sleep when you have neck pain?  Every toss and turn makes your neck hurt enough to wake you up.  It creates a vicious cycle – you don’t sleep well so you feel less well and feel more pain.

When your muscles are soft and relaxed, you can find a more comfortable sleeping position.  This is also one of the reasons why a hot bath or shower before bed helps you sleep better.
